INTRO TO METAL SHOP
This class is designed to provide an orientation to the classic metal shop machinery and equipment. This course will also cover safety procedures and best practices in the metal shop. Over the course of three hours each student receives hands-on instruction in the safe and proper use of the most commonly used machines in a metal shop.
What is covered:
- Cold Saw
- Horizontal and vertical band saws
- Drill press
- English wheel and planishing hammer
- Plate roller
- Sheet metal shear
- Multiple grinders and abrasives
INTRO TO MIG WELDING
Interested in the world of welding? Maybe you just bought a new welder for a home project and need a solid introduction to get up and running. Or maybe you’re just curious how welding works.
This is a great way to get expert advice on welding techniques and best practices. In a semi-private class (maximum of 4), students will learn how to use a basic metal inert gas (MIG) welder to produce even, controlled beads as they work with solid wire and shielding gas. Throughout the course students will work with different metal alloys, material thickness, and weld joints.
INTRO TO TIG WELDING
This is a great follow up course to our MiG Welding class. TiG Welding can be slightly more complex so although it is not required, students are encouraged to take our MiG Welding course before moving on to TiG Welding.
In a semi-private class (maximum of 4), students will learn basic tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding in this class. Students will create quality, precise weld beads on mild (thin) steel using this technique, which produces highly controllable welds on stainless, aluminum, and bronze and is often used on aesthetic welds of small to large projects.
INTRO TO VERTICAL MILLING
The vertical milling machine is a precision tool used for shaping and fabrication by the removal of stock, typically from metallic work pieces. Plastics and other materials can also be machined on the mill depending upon tooling and material.
Mill machining and material removal is typically made by a rotary cutter held in a spindle. Cutting options are more sophisticated and variable than a drill press by virtue of a moveable table and/or vise (x and y-axes) and vertical spindle movement (z-axis).
Students will learn the ins and outs of the vertical milling machine – from speed selection to using the digital readout to changing end mills and securing work needed to accurately machine parts. Students will cut, drill, then surface metal.
INTRO TO CNC MILLING
This class introduces students to the Tormach 1100 CNC Mill, an essential tool of any metal or fabrication shop.
The class begins with an introduction to the PathPilot software, which allows you to create a tool path and dial in the settings for your cut.
The class then shifts to the machine itself where you’ll set up your material, dial in the settings and start milling!
INTRO TO WATERJET CUTTING
Whether you are an artist with a unique project or a small business owner who wants to fabricate a product for sale, one of the best ways to cut through metal is waterjet cutting.
Waterjet cutting is a versatile method of cutting almost any material (stone, metal, plastics, wood) with great flexibility and precision. Edges, curves, lettering, and internal cutouts can be made relatively quickly and easily compared to cutting by hand. Waterjet cutting uses high pressure & velocity water (or water with an abrasive) pushed through a nozzle to slice through tough and thick materials. There are many benefits of waterjet cutting:
It does a great job in creating smooth edges that often don’t need a second round of sanding and it is computer-controlled so it can make intricate cuts precisely
INTRO TO THE METAL LATHE
The lathe is different from other shop tools, because it rotates the workpiece rather than the cutting tool.
As the workpiece is rotating, the tool is moved in one of two axes. The lathe is used to cut cylinders, tapers and threads on the inside or outside of the workpiece.
In this class, students learn to create tapered or cylindrical metal objects with the metal lathe. Students will also learn to choose and select appropriate cutting tools, choose speeds, accurately read the digital readout, and secure their work to ensure accurate cuts.
