BLACKSMITHING + WOODWORKING WORKSHOP: Make Your Own Coat Rack!

Unleash your creativity and immerse yourself in the world of craftsmanship with our Blacksmithing and Woodworking Coat Rack Workshop! This unique and hands-on class combines the timeless traditions of blacksmithing and woodworking, giving you the opportunity to forge and build your very own one-of-a-kind coat rack.

What you'll cover:

Blacksmithing techniques: Start by forging the metal hook, using the anvil, hammer, and forge.

INTRO TO WOODSHOP: Make Your Own Step Stool!

This course is designed for the beginner looking to gain a basic introduction to woodworking skills and build their confidence in a professional wood shop environment. In this class each student will work side by side with our expert instructor and make a small step stool in just one day! The teaching points revolve around learning the basics of woodworking and confidence-building techniques. Our hope is that you will walk away from this class proud of what you’ve made and eager to learn more!

INTRO TO WOODSHOP: Make Your Own Cutting Board!

This is a beginner course designed to get students up to speed in some of the most fundamental aspects of woodworking.  In this class, each student will create their own cutting board with expert guidance along the way.  Cutting boards are a great first project in the woodshop, covering the basics of woodworking machinery and techniques while creating a functional piece that will last a lifetime!

INTRO TO WOODTURNING: HOW TO USE A WOOD LATHE

Learn how to safely set up the lathe, use different woodturning tools, and prepare materials to make pegs, table legs, bowls, and other round or cylindrical wood creations.

Students will collectively work on two projects, first a spindle, which will introduce them to the basics of turning wood, and get them comfortable with what can sometimes be a rather intimidating tool. Then they will begin their first bowl, allowing them a better sense of what the lathe is really capable of. 

WHAT IS COVERED:

  • Parts and functions of the wood lathe
  • Methods of preparing and safely attaching wood
  • Selecting and using a variety of chisels
  • Sanding and polishing practices
  • Demo on tool sharpening
  • Where to find additional tools, equipment, and raw materials, from local San Diego vendors.

INTRO TO VCARVE: CAD TO CAM

This class will introduce you to the world of computer aided design and computer aided machining by walking you through the features of Vectric's VCarve Pro software.

VCarve is an industry leader in CNC operations and is an essential program to master for those looking to utilize a CNC Router.

This course is also a prerequisite to our CNC Router training. If you are interested in learning the machine operations for our 4' x 8' CNC Router, please register for our CNC training class after completing this course.

INTRO TO THE CNC ROUTER

The course introduces you to the machine operations of a 4′ x 8′ CNC Router. You’ll start off by learning the numerous features and settings of the machine by completing a full job set up. This includes setting up the collets, router bits, vacuum table and more.

WHAT IS COVERED:

  • Properly secure material to machine bed
  • Machine warmup procedure
  • Tool holder setup and multi tool changer use
  • Load and run cut files on cnc controller
  • Light troubleshooting of common issues

 

PLEASE NOTE: This class has a prerequisite: our VCarve Pro CAD to CAM training. If you have not completed this training yet please sign up for and complete that course before registering for the CNC Router course.

 

ABOUT MAKETORY CLASSES

PLEASE NOTE:

  • All classes are open to the public however, if you're an active member please use the Member's Portal or the Maketory app to sign up for classes.  Active members receive discounted pricing and more flexible scheduling options.  If you are interested in becoming a member please check out our membership options or get in touch with us directly.
  • Purchase two tickets and get 15% off! Just select the option for 2 at checkout!
  • If a class is sold out and you have a group interested, please contact us directly to coordinate a new date.
  • Mandatory safety equipment for all classes: Safety Glasses and Hearing Protection (Maketory has pairs available at the facility if you do not own any). Closed-toed shoes, full length pants, short sleeves, hair pulled back and no loose fitting clothing or jewelry.
  • Minimum Age for Classes: 18, or 13 or older with an amended waiver signed by a parent or guardian
  • We require at least 3 participants to run a class. In the event we do not
  • reach 3 participants we will reach out to reschedule or issue a refund, whichever you prefer.
  • Tickets are nonrefundable (unless class is cancelled) and can not be used for another date.
